POEMS

Hope

Beyond the darkest tunnel,

It’s shining ‘round the bend.

There is no light so bright as HOPE –

It’s How Our Problems End.

Embrace the awesome power

nd peace that it can lend.

Believe it and receive HOPE –

It’s How Our Problems End.

Don’t give up – give all to God.

And know that he will send

The way to cope, the gift of HOPE –

It’s How Our Problems End.

I Asked God

I asked God to take away my pain.
God said, No.
'It is not for me to take away, but for you to give it up.'

I asked God to make my handicapped child whole.
God said, No.
'Her spirit was whole, her body was only temporary.'

I asked God to grant me patience.
God said, No.
'Patience is a byproduct of tribulations; it isn't granted, it is earned.'

I asked God to give me happiness.
God said, No.
'I give you blessings. Happiness is up to you.'

I asked God to spare me pain.
God said, No.
'Suffering draws you apart from worldly cares and brings you closer to me.'

I asked God to make my spirit grow.
God said, No.
'You must grow on your own, but I will prune you to make you fruitful.'

I asked God for all things that I might enjoy life.
God said, No.
'I will give you life so that you may enjoy all things.'

I asked God to help me love others, as much as he loves me.
God said...
'Ahhhh, finally you have the idea.'

Humor and Good Cheer

Bible Passages

“These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.” (John 15:11).

“Happy are you who weep now; you shall laugh.” (Luke 6:21).

“Be of Good cheer, I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33).

These passage depict Jesus as happy, cheerful, joyfull. When you picture Jesus' face in your mind, what do you see? A serios demeanor? One comforting another? One weeping at the death of Lazareth? Perhaps smiling while playing with children? But do you ever picture Jesus laughing?

Humor -- in fact anything that can make you even smile a little is great therapy for chronic pain and if there is something that can generate a full throttled belly laugh, that means for a couple minutes the pain either goes away or reduces in severity substantially. So find ways to smile or laugh. Look at home videos  from years ago, rent comedy VHS or DVD of old TV shows, such as those starring Lucele Ball, Jackie Gleason, Red Fox, Dean Martin, or movies with Bob Hope, Bing Grosby, Fred Astaire,  -- you get the picture. Make comedy part of your life. And add a laughing Jesus to your mental photo gallery and bring it up when you are down. Maybe it will help! Let us know what you think about this approach.

FOOTPRINTS IN THE SAND

One night a man had a dream.
He dreamed he was walking along the beach with the Lord.
Across the sky flashed scenes from his life.
For each scene, he noticed two sets of footprints in the sand.
One belonged to him, and the other to the Lord.
When the last scene of his life flashed before him,
he looked back at the footprints in the sand.

He noticed that many times along the path of his life,
there was only one set of footprints.
He also noticed that it happened
at the very lowest
and saddest times in his life.
This really bothered him
and he questioned the Lord about it.

"Lord, you said that once I decided to follow you,
you'd walk with me all the way.
But I have noticed that during
the most troublesome times in my life,
there is only one set of footprints.
I don't understand why when I needed you the most
you would leave me."

The Lord replied,
"My precious, precious child,
I love you and would never leave you.
During your times of trial and suffering,
when you see only one set of footprints,
it was then I carried you."

PRAYERS

Prayer: Together for Pain

As we gather together this evening,

We pray to God,

To Jesus Christ; and

To the Spirit.

We pray that you will open our hearts, minds, and souls.

We pray for greater understanding and wisdom, for love and compassion, for strength and courage, and faith and hope.

We pray for the strength to endure.

We pray for the wisdom to hear and learn your answers to our many questions and to clarify our confusion and doubts.

We pray for the courage to use what we learn to comfort others in pain and to let our anger dissolve rather than erupt.

We pray for hope, the hope that you will relieve our pain, strengthen our endurance and perseverance, and the hope that we will find joy in our lives.

In the name of the great Comforter, Jesus Christ,

Amen.

Un-Named Prayer

Oh Lord, help me accept this pain;

To cope with it

By relating it

To what you suffered

To redeem the world.

May it transform me

Into the likeness of You.
